Do you adapt your personal life to your work or do you make your job work around your personal life?
I choose the second option most of the time. Owning my own business has been a game changer for me because I’ve been able to adapt my schedule to my physical needs.
I suffer from insomnia and regularly have several short nights in a row. When I had a 9 to 5 job, in addition of being exhausted, I was anxious and stressed out because I anticipated the fact that I would be tired at work. It was an endless loop filled by dark circles under my eyes and a stream of coffee. My emotional state was of course quite terrible too.
Now that I make my own schedule, I can work around it and know that it will be ok if I don’t sleep. See, when I wake up in the middle of the night, I am usually wide awake with my brain running wild so I can work for a few hours. And when I finally feel that I will be able to fall asleep, I go back to bed for a few hours. It allows me to keep up with the workload and feel rested for the remaining of the day. I am more peaceful and more available to others that way.
When everything feels difficult about owning my own business and that I think maybe I should get back to having a 9 to 5 job, I remind myself how miserable I felt back then because of insomnia and how much better I feel now. It’s a great motivator to make it work!
